If you hold a Gold Card, the DVA will generally fund all clinically necessary dental services to keep your mouth and teeth healthy. This means your coverage isn't restricted to service-related injuries.
The Veteran White Card

What DVA Treatments Are Covered?
For eligible veterans, the DVA scheme covers a massive range of preventative and restorative dental work. When you visit Newstead Smiles, your funded treatments can include:
- Routine Check-ups & Cleans: Keeping on top of your oral health with a comprehensive dental check-up and clean, including examinations, X-rays, and preventive scaling (usually covered every 6 months).
- General Dentistry: Fillings for cavities, tooth extractions, and root canal therapy to relieve your pain.
- Dentures: Whether you need a brand-new set, a repair, a reline, or implant-supported dentures. Under DVA rules, you can typically have your dentures relined every two years and replaced completely every six years.
- Major Dental Work: Restorative treatments including dental crowns, dental bridges, and in some cases, standard dental implants. (Please note that complex treatments require prior approval from the DVA, but our team handles the entire application process for you.
DVA Dental Limits (The Fine Print, Made Simple)
For everyday dental care—like your check-ups, standard fillings, and extractions—there is usually no financial limit, meaning you won’t pay a cent.
However, for high-cost items like crowns and bridges, the DVA applies a Biennial Monetary Limit (BML). Currently, this limit is capped at $5,980.30 over a two-year period. If your complex treatment goes over this amount, there might be a small co-payment required.
(Note: You are completely exempt from this financial cap if you are an ex-POW, if the treatment is for an accepted service-related condition, or if you are receiving treatment for cancer affecting the jaw or teeth).

Who is eligible for DVA-funded dental care at Newstead Smiles?
If you hold a DVA Gold Card, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs will fund all dental services necessary to meet your clinical needs. If you hold a DVA White Card, you are eligible for funded dental treatment provided it is directly related to your accepted service-related disabilities.
Are there any out-of-pocket costs for my treatment?
For eligible veterans receiving clinically necessary and approved treatments, services are billed directly to the DVA. This means you can generally access top-quality dental care with zero out-of-pocket expenses.
What types of dental treatments are covered under the DVA?
The DVA covers a comprehensive range of clinically required treatments, which typically includes:
- Routine check-ups, cleans, and x-rays
- General dental care (e.g., toothache relief and fillings)
- Periodontal (gum disease) treatment
- Dentures (repairs, relines, and brand new fabrication)
- Major dental work like crowns, bridges, and extractions
What do I need to bring to my first appointment?
When you visit Newstead Smiles for the first time, simply bring your valid DVA Health Card (either the physical card or the digital version) along with a valid form of photo identification. Please let the team know you are a DVA patient at the time of booking.
Do you require DVA approval before treating me?
Most routine and general dental treatments can be provided immediately without prior approval. However, for certain complex or high-cost treatments (such as specific crowns or dental implants), the clinic may need to submit a treatment plan to the DVA for financial authorisation prior to starting the procedure. Your dentist will handle this paperwork for you.
